I like all kinds, Essays the least unless you mean creative ones. there's just so much to learn about, when a story just grips you with the author's idea. If it's new or different, if it moves you and gives your mind something to think about... it's a good story no matter what format it's in.
I read for the sake of stories, so I prefer those.
Which means I didn't know whether to answer novels or short stories. Short stories if I'm reading off a bright screen, or keeping as anthologies in the bathroom, and novels otherwise, I guess?
I like to read novels, short stories, essays and non-fiction the most. So I clicked "I don't have a preference." But I do. Poetry can be wonderful too, but sometimes it seems the writer is using a thesaurus just to find a rhythm or rhyme, which often doesn't work for me. Then there's the problem I have with fixed form poetry. I had no idea what a sestina was until I decided to research it. I had no idea there were so many forms of haiku--and it goes pretty much downhill from there
