Personal
Again, I've let time get away from me since the last journal entry. Thanks to
Memnalar's generosity, I get to use journal skins again
The past three months have been pretty boring. Got used to my new job, braved winter, had two MORE teeth pulled in January thanks to fractures (no more trouble with that though, thank goodness), and just had surgery on my thyroid to remove a nodule: benign but annoying. I have to be out of work until next week, so that's that. Eh. I'm starting to feel a little better though.
As far as what I'm reading/watching/playing, I'm almost completely caught up with
Welcome to Nightvale, which feels kind of bittersweet. I know I've talked with a handful of people here who have said they couldn't really get into WTNV, but I'm a little sad to be finally finished with it; I've been listening to it on and off for a year and a half. If anyone knows a good podcast I might be able to replace it with, please let me know... (
SilverInkblot, I'm looking at you!)
I also played
Pokemon Ultra Sun, which was a doozy. I really truly loved everything about it - from the characters to new & updated features. I recommend it to anyone - even if you've never played a Pokemon game before.
dA stuff
a belated thank you for the DD on
The Exposed from last fall! I'd kind of forgotten about it to be honest. I haven't written a whole lot of fiction since September/October, though I hope to maybe put together some D&D related stuff again soon - background stories, the like.
Also of course this month is NaPoWriMo & Camp NaNoWriMo... I'm doing NaPo myself and having a relatively good time of it. I'm super rusty with poetry, but I'm planning on sticking poetry into my reading again to get a good flow and remember what good poems sound like. Looking forward to what everyone creates this month!
Book Recommendations
Speaking of reading, I've read a fair amount of stuff this year already. I've read some really good stuff and a couple of duds so far Here are some of my favorites.
Wonder by RJ Palacio
After hearing that they made this into a movie last year (that apparently is quite good), I decided to finally read this one for myself. The story follows Auggie, a boy with facial deformities, as he enters middle school for the first time. It's a YA book, so the message it tries to tell might be a little simple than real life can allow, but I thought it was a good book. You can find the goodreads page
here.
Infinite Home by Kathleen AlcottAnother book that's been on my to-read pile for a while,
Infinite Home follows a cast of characters who live in the same apartment building together. When their landlady begins showing signs of dementia (and her son comes about, threatening eviction) they unite to find a solution. This one was a bit of a slow burn, but the ending really got me good. You can find the goodreads page
here.
The Park Bench by Christophe Chaboute
A wordless graphic novel about the life of a park bench - people who pass it by, sit on it and come back again and again. Not really much of a story, but the art is breathtaking. Honestly more like watching a silent black-and-white film unfold before you. You can find the goodreads page
here.
This Is How It Always Is by Laurie FrankelThis was a read for book club and I enjoyed it quite a bit. It's a novel about a child's trans transition and how it affects their family and those around them. The narrative was well-written and compelling, and the story itself was hopeful and inclusive. You can find the goodreads page
here.
The Inkblots by Damion SearlsOut of the non-fiction books I've read so far this year, this one has been the best. It's part biography of Hermann Rorschach, the man who invented the Rorschach psychological test, and part study of the Rorschach test itself and its' influence on psychology. Personally I liked the biography portion the best, but it really is worth a read if you're into history or have any interest about psychology. You can find the goodreads page
