Watching You

Personal
Well, it's been a good while since I've written a journal (almost a year), so a lot has happened in a year, I guess? My sister and her husband bought a house in January, and I moved in with them. My sister's best friend/old college roommate moved in with us in June, which has been great. Um, what else? I've still been struggling with tooth issues but have appointments with specialists in the next couple months. And we got a couple new kitties (Barnie and Winston) who I love very much.

Summer has been busy.. I was on an overnight weekend shift at my job from March to June, so didn't do much in June. In July we had our annual camping trip and went to an amusement park. The first weekend was the annual Twin Days trip, which with the exception of losing my car keys was a lot of fun. And last weekend we went to the Ren Faire.

I don't have many plans for the fall, though I'd like to do something fun for Halloween this year (besides my annual watch of Over The Garden Wall).

dA stuff
Another FFM has come and gone, and I surprisingly did a lot of stand-alone pieces. And accidentally created a new character who is probably the weirdest guy yet. I'd like to collect and edit pieces and start actually doing things more consistently, but who knows. Hoping to read through other people's pieces soon as well.

Also a (very) belated thank you to LadyLincoln for the feature in her Ladies of Lit project in April, and to GDeyke for the DD on an FFM piece from last year! It's always exciting and an honor to be featured. :eager:

Book/Media Recs
I watched the Good Omens special on Amazon in June, which I highly encourage if you haven't seen it. I was watching The Ancient Magus Bride before FFM and have about half of that left. I've loved that, and have the two books of supplemental stories to read when I'm done with the anime.

Recently I've gotten into Dreamcorp LLC with my housemate, which is excellent and trippy. Best to go into it without knowing a whole lot, but it's like a weird combo of The Office, Welcome to Nightvale, and a dash of Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Portal thrown in.

Might check out The Boys on Prime next. Or finally start reading Homestuck, which I've wanted to do forever.

I've been reading a lot, but nothing completely mind-blowing/life-changing lately. Oh, except I did finally read Crime and Punishment for book club. And Neil Patrick Harris' memoir was surprisingly pretty funny and excellent.

I've actually been listening to a lot of non-fiction podcasts, like Sawbones (medical stuff), Court Appointed (law stuff), the Purrrcast (kitty stuff), Ologies (science stuff), Trends like These (current event stuff), and All the Books (new book stuff). I listened to a lot of them while I was on overnights because I got really bored and being alone in the office kind of sucked. So listening to voices talking about stuff made it suck less.

Hope everyone's been having a good summer! doodlerTM, out!

Personal

It's been a long time since I've written a journal so I've got quite a few things to talk about.

Managed to make it to a few amusement parks this summer, which was fun. The best amusement park we went to this year was Waldameer World in Erie PA. The Ravine Flyer II coaster was something else, and the log flume had two drops! My sister and I went to Waldameer the same weekend we went to the Twinsburg festival, which was pretty great. This year the theme was video games, so we dressed up as Toad from Super Mario Bros. We also hung out with a pair of twins I knew from college so that was great, too.

My sister's wedding is at the end of September, so we had her bridal shower a couple weeks ago. I planned it along with my sister's fiance's mom, who is super nice and helpful. We had the bridal dress-up game and my aunt & cousin had our dad in a table cloth with a bubble-wrap veil... it was something else! I'm keeping track of the invites and a couple of other things. It's going to be an exciting time, especially since my sister's best friend is going to fly in for Norway for the week before the wedding.

I've had a few teeth issues the past month... had to have another tooth pulled because of fractures and got a cavity filled today. Here's hoping to no more medical issues for a while. Being in pain sucksss.

Oh, and of course Flash Fiction Month was in July! It was a successful writing time for me, though I still haven't caught up reading the stories from everyone else. I'd like to write something longer and maybe take my writing a little more seriously, but it's been nice to just relax for the most part in August.

Book Recommendations

I haven't been reading a whole lot... I tend to read less in the summer just because there's lots going on (Flash Fiction Month, for one). I did read The Handmaid's Tale in July for book club, and we had an interesting discussion about it. I read two excellent fantasy books this summer, though: The Neverending Story (which I didn't know was an actual book) and Uprooted by Naomi Novik. So if high fantasy is your thing, I'd recommend checking those out.

Right now I'm reading a fantasy book series (Indexing & Indexing: Reflections by Seanan McGuire) for a found poetry project that I'm doing in October. We're reading a YA book for book club in September (Eleanor & Park), but I don't know if I'll get to it. Too many books, too little time.

Again, I've let time get away from me since the last journal entry. Thanks to Memnalar's generosity, I get to use journal skins again :dummy:

The past three months have been pretty boring. Got used to my new job, braved winter, had two MORE teeth pulled in January thanks to fractures (no more trouble with that though, thank goodness), and just had surgery on my thyroid to remove a nodule: benign but annoying. I have to be out of work until next week, so that's that. Eh. I'm starting to feel a little better though.

As far as what I'm reading/watching/playing, I'm almost completely caught up with Welcome to Nightvale, which feels kind of bittersweet. I know I've talked with a handful of people here who have said they couldn't really get into WTNV, but I'm a little sad to be finally finished with it; I've been listening to it on and off for a year and a half. If anyone knows a good podcast I might be able to replace it with, please let me know... (SilverInkblot, I'm looking at you!)

I also played Pokemon Ultra Sun, which was a doozy. I really truly loved everything about it - from the characters to new & updated features. I recommend it to anyone - even if you've never played a Pokemon game before. :la:

a belated thank you for the DD on The Exposed from last fall! I'd kind of forgotten about it to be honest. I haven't written a whole lot of fiction since September/October, though I hope to maybe put together some D&D related stuff again soon - background stories, the like.

Also of course this month is NaPoWriMo & Camp NaNoWriMo... I'm doing NaPo myself and having a relatively good time of it. I'm super rusty with poetry, but I'm planning on sticking poetry into my reading again to get a good flow and remember what good poems sound like. Looking forward to what everyone creates this month!

Book Recommendations

Speaking of reading, I've read a fair amount of stuff this year already. I've read some really good stuff and a couple of duds so far Here are some of my favorites.

Wonder by RJ Palacio
After hearing that they made this into a movie last year (that apparently is quite good), I decided to finally read this one for myself. The story follows Auggie, a boy with facial deformities, as he enters middle school for the first time. It's a YA book, so the message it tries to tell might be a little simple than real life can allow, but I thought it was a good book. You can find the goodreads page here.

Infinite Home by Kathleen Alcott
Another book that's been on my to-read pile for a while, Infinite Home follows a cast of characters who live in the same apartment building together. When their landlady begins showing signs of dementia (and her son comes about, threatening eviction) they unite to find a solution. This one was a bit of a slow burn, but the ending really got me good. You can find the goodreads page here.

The Park Bench by Christophe Chaboute
A wordless graphic novel about the life of a park bench - people who pass it by, sit on it and come back again and again. Not really much of a story, but the art is breathtaking. Honestly more like watching a silent black-and-white film unfold before you. You can find the goodreads page here.

This Is How It Always Is by Laurie Frankel
This was a read for book club and I enjoyed it quite a bit. It's a novel about a child's trans transition and how it affects their family and those around them. The narrative was well-written and compelling, and the story itself was hopeful and inclusive. You can find the goodreads page here.

The Inkblots by Damion Searls
Out of the non-fiction books I've read so far this year, this one has been the best. It's part biography of Hermann Rorschach, the man who invented the Rorschach psychological test, and part study of the Rorschach test itself and its' influence on psychology. Personally I liked the biography portion the best, but it really is worth a read if you're into history or have any interest about psychology. You can find the goodreads page here.

If you have a Goodreads and want to follow me/add me as a friend, that'd be cool! My username is the same there or you can clickhere for my profile. My username is also the same for tumblr, in which I reblog a lot of fanart, sh*tposts, and pictures of cats.

Until next time, doodlerTM out! :salute:

The Currents

3 min read
I know I missed last month, but a fair bit of things have gone on.

In my last journal, I mentioned that I had to get a root canal for a molar. As it turns out, the tooth had to be pulled because the root canal failed. :stare: I tried, I guess. I've never had a tooth pulled (when I got my wisdom teeth out, I was put under and had stitches), so it was a little weird when they just popped it out  It's healed well and I'm hoping that's the end of my teeth problems for a while.

I'm starting a new job at the end of the month - I got hired at my sister's work! I'm pretty excited because I'll get my own desk, along with better benefits and the like. I don't have anything bad to say about my current job, except that I think it's time for me to move on.

Christmas was good - I took off work (usually I tend to work on holidays) and spent the day with my sister's fiance's family, and also saw some relatives on my mom's side who I haven't seen since I graduated high school. Saw my dad & his wife before the holidays, which was nice. My mom only gave me a headache for Christmas (to make a bunch of drama simple) and so I didn't see her, but I think it was for the best.

As far as reading, I'm on book seven of the Dresden Files. :dummy: I'm planning on reading A Series of Unfortunate Events so I can watch the series on Netflix, since the second season is coming out in March. And also planning on reading All Quiet on the Western Front, which I somehow missed in high school/college.

The D&D campaign I was in with Maxim wrapped up - with our level 7 party killing a level 13 boss with two crit rolls and finishing it off with magic missile, of all things. I'm DMing our new campaign, which I called Dank Swords on a whim. We had a successful first night - here's hoping I can come up with a great long-term plot :la:

I haven't really been writing a whole lot because of the holidays and such, but there's a few ideas I'd like to play around with. I've been doing "focused" journaling, which I think might be a lot more beneficial than how I usually do personal journaling. Instead of trying to "catch up" on events that have been happening in my life, I'm trying to write shorter ruminations each day. It's been a lot more meaningful for me already. As far as dA stuff goes, Flash-Fic-Month released their new prompt for January which is a doozy: Flash Prompt #14 - January 2018 Also LadyLincoln is running a new contest: Celebrating Positivity and Tolerance Contest

Hope everyone has been well and good luck in all your endeavors (writing or otherwise) in this new year!

It's been another short while since I've written a journal entry, so here goes!

I had to get a root canal last week for a tooth that's been bothering me on and off for the past month or so. Apparently I had a hairline fracture inside my tooth :ohnoes: It turned out well though, and I'm going back this week to get it filled in. Luckily, insurance covered most of it. Teeth are expensive :stare:

I didn't do a whole lot for Halloween; my sister, her fiance and I painted pumpkins and we dressed up as Mario, Luigi, and Toad respectively. I won the "most unique" prize at my work's costume contest. (Granted, only like 7 people dressed up, but there you have it.)
Toad by doodlerTM      Pumpkin by doodlerTM
The pumpkin is the Beast from Over the Garden Wall, which we finally watched this year. It was so good! Creepy and strange in a way that took me by surprise.

I watched an anime last week called Death Parade, which I also enjoyed as well (besides the ending, as I felt like it didn't really conclude one of the series plot arcs). It's very intense and violent though, so I'm not sure if I can recommend it to everyone. Also in the middle of reading the Dresden Files; I just finished the third book. Things are starting to get much better in the series and I'm really starting to warm up to the supporting characters.

Besides that, nothing much doing. I can't believe it's almost the end of the year! My sister's fiance has let us know that we'll probably be wrapping up our current D&D campaign (the one that I'm playing Maxim in) by January. It's kind of sad because I've enjoyed playing with Maxim so much, but I've offered to DM the next campaign that we all have together. Since I was going to DM an in-person campaign that didn't quite work out, this will now be the first game that I'll be DMing even though it'll be a while out yet.

DA-wise, the results for the Gauntlet and All Hallow's Tales contests are in. There are some pretty excellent entries for both contests! As for right now, I know LiliWrites is running her Birthday Contest until the end of November. And for all of you knee-deep in NaNo, good luck!

Until next time, doodlerTM out!
